Derecho Damage Insurance Coverage

South Dakota is no stranger to severe weather. In 2022 alone, we experienced not one, but two derecho storms. In order for a weather event to be considered a “derecho” storm by the National Weather Service, the wind damage swath must extend more than 240 miles and include wind gusts of at least 58 mph or greater. The damage caused by the derecho storms in South Dakota was extensive and widespread. If your home was damaged by either (or both) of these storms, you may find yourself up against even stronger forces than the 99 mph derecho winds that South Dakota experienced: your insurance company.

Most homeowner’s insurance policies cover storm damage, even when those storms are rare weather events like a derecho. Sometimes insurers incorrectly invoke certain policy exclusions that result in a lower amount of money, or a denied claim. Other times, an insurer might even claim that the storm caused no damage or an insignificant amount of damage, even when there is clear evidence of substantial damage. If you find yourself in this situation, it is important to be persistent and to get legal help.

We have attorneys with extensive experience in investigating and handling weather-related property damage claims. And we know how to review and analyze insurance policies to determine whether there is coverage for your claim. If you have questions about whether the derecho storm damage is covered by your homeowner’s policy, you should contact our office.  Our dedicated lawyers will talk with you, free of charge, to see if they can assist with your claim.
